MBB: Thunderwolves keep hosting dream alive

The Western Mustangs are co-operating with Lakehead’s bid to host an OUA men’s playoff game.

But the Guelph Gryphons would like nothing better than to play the role of spoiler. They came close on Friday, taking the host Thunderwolves to overtime, ultimately falling 80-76.

With the win, keyed by Dwayne Harvey’s 20-point effort, lifted Lakehead into a fourth-place tie with Western at 8-13.
But because Western, losers of three straight, swept the Wolves earlier this season, Lakehead must win its regular-season finale and hope the Mustangs fall to Laurier earlier in the day.

Thank Henry Tan for making possible.

The rookie guard hit a three-pointer with 29 seconds to play in regulation, tying the game 68-68 and sending it to overtime.
The Thunderwolves had overcome a nine-point halftime deficit.

Tied 76-76, LU’s Joey Nitychoruk was the hero, stealing the ball and hitting a jump shot with eight seconds to go give the Wolves the win.

Harvey put it out of reach with a pair of free throws.

Mitchel Clark, with 21 off the bench for Guelph, led all scorers.
The two sides will tip off again on Saturday. Game time is 8 p.m.
