WATERLOO, Ont. -- To call this a less than ideal start for the Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey team would be an understatement.
For the second straight night the Thunderwolves dropped a one goal decision, losing 4-3 to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at Sun Life Arena in the second game of their regular season opening weekend.
Lakehead got off to a strong start, carrying a 2-0 lead into the first intermission after goals from blueliner Jay Gilbert and forward Mike Hammond.
The Golden Hawks responded in the second period, beating Thunderwolves goaltender Jeff Bosch three times in the frame. Kyle Morrison, Matt Provost and Ryan Shipley all found the back of the net.
The Thunderwolves found the temporary equalizer early in the third as defenceman Nathan Bruyere rocketed a shot past Golden Hawks keeper Christopher Festarini less than two minutes in. It was the second goal of the contest scored by the back end.
Laurier picked up the game-winner five minutes into the frame, with Greg Cerilli beating Bosch for the difference maker.
Bosch turned aside 27 shots as Lakehead outshot the Golden Hawks by a 35-31 margin.
Lakehead fell 6-5 to the Waterloo Warriors Friday night.
The Thunderwolves will take on the York Lions next weekend at the Fort William Gardens for their home opening series.
