Bob Thompson picked the right time to get hot.

The Woodstock, Ont. native, a member of the National Development Centre-Thunder Bay Nordic ski team, captured an Olympic trial skate technique sprint race, hours after finishing 18th in the morning qualifying round.

Thompson will have to do well in Saturday’s skate sprint event. Times from the two races will be combined to determine who gets the Olympic and world championship berths.
