A five-goal second period
proved pivotal as the Nipigon Elks rolled over the Screaming
Eagles 10-2 Friday
in their Thunder Bay Jr. B/Juvenile/AAA Hockey League home
opener at the
Nipigon Community Centre.
Mitch Kerr put the home side on top five minutes into the
contest only to see
the Eagles' Charlie Debungie knot the affair midway through the
opening period.
The Elks then took control in the middle frame striking
with the five
unanswered tallies to go up 6-1 after 40 minutes.
Scoring in the stanza for Nipigon was Kerr, with his second,
Jessie Assunmaa,
Brandon Polhill, Cole Saunders and Nick Parry.
Four more markers in the third period iced it with Saunders and
Assunmaa both
adding their second goals of the night while Zach Nuttall and
Brodie Biasiol
supplied singles. Debungie also had another tally for the
Eagles.
The Elks held the edge on the shot clock by a 62-21 margin
with Ryan
Williams picking up the win. Eagles' starter Valley Quechagon
along with
back-up Devlin Daignault both saw playing time in net in this
one.
League play resumes Tuesday when Nipigon (1-0-1) travels to
Thunder Bay to take
on the Northern Hawks (1-0-1) in an early-season battle for
first place. Game
time is 8 p.m. at the Tournament Centre.
