RED LAKE, Ont. – The comeback kids were at it again on Friday night.
Newly acquired Austin Storm scored the lone goal of the third period and it proved be the winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars rallied back from a 3-2 second-period deficit to knock off the host English River Miners 4-3.
The Stars struck first, Brad Arabia scoring just 13 seconds into the contest, and led 2-1 after one, English River’s Kole Comin tying the game at 5:04 before Brad Thrower put the visitors back in front at the 16:11 mark.
Sidney Gladue and Michael Di Lullo scored 14 minutes apart in the second as the Miners took their first and only lead of the night, but 24 seconds after Di Lullo’s go-ahead goal Nicholas Nigro responded, potting his 21st of the season with 1:02 to play in the period.
Nathaniel Dupuis made 32 saves in goal for Thunder Bay to pick up the win, the North Stars sixth straight.
Spencer Eschyschyn took the loss, stopping 26 of 30 shots directed his way.
In other Superior International Junior Hockey League action on Friday night, Jack Bernie scored twice and Dylan Kooner and Ryan Gazich had three assists apiece to lead the Fort Frances Lakers (9-10-4) to a 6-1 win over the Thief River Falls Norskies (9-11-4).
In Hoyt’s Lake, Minn. the Dryden Ice Dogs needed some third period heroics to pull out a 5-3 win over the last-place Minnesota Iron Rangers (4-18-1). Derek McPhail tied the game and Jacen Bracko scored back-to-back goals 2:32 seconds apart that proved to be the difference as the Ice Dogs (18-3-3) kept pace with the first-place North Stars (20-5-2)
