Queens hand Hounds first loss

REGINA - Kaitlyn Quarrell scored three goals and added an assist as the Thunder Bay Queens beat Notre Dame 5-2 on Thursday, handing the Hounds their first loss of the Esso Cup women's midget hockey championship.

Thunder Bay, which grabbed top spot in the standings, and Notre Dame had already clinched playoff berths.

Brittany Zuback and Jana Henry also scored for the Queens, while Olivia Howe and Taylor Woods scored for Notre Dame.

Earlier, Heather Kashman scored the only goal in a shootout to lead the Edmonton Thunder to 3-2 win over the Moncton Rockets and a berth in the semifinals. Jessica Sekulic and Riana Magee scored in regulation for Edmonton, while Janik Robichaud had Moncton's two goals.

Edmonton faces Thunder Bay in the semis, while Notre Dame faces the Regina Rebels, who secured their berth with a 3-1 win over the Remparts du Richelieu to wrap up the preliminary round.

Andrea Ehrmantraut, Patricia McGauley and Kelsa Duffy, into an empty net, scored for Regina. Genevieve Bannon scored the Remparts' lone goal.
