Queens stay strong as tourney hosts

GAME 1 --Bantam A: Triad Queens 1 Taranis Queens 0–The Triad Contracting peewee Queens started the Showcase on a winning note defeating the Taranis Contracting bantam A Queens 1-0 in a hard-fought battle staged Tuesday evening.

Following two scoreless periods, Amanda Pages would notch the eventual game-winner in the middle of the 3rd frame finishing off the work of Emily Varrin and Alyssa Cicigoi, who drew assists on the play. Aden Johnson posted the shutout for the peewees.

GAME 2--Bantam A: Dryden 3 Fort Frances 2—Shelby Tourond tallied twice in the third period as Dryden rallied from a one-goal deficit to edge Fort Frances. Anika Tardiff added the other Dryden goal. Madisyn DeGagne Averi King notched power play markers for the Fort in the loss.

GAME 3--Midget A: OPG Queens 2 James Bay 1—Midget A action began with the OPG Queens of Thunder Bay posting a narrow victory over the James Bay Ice Cats.

Cassy Curtis and Marielle Orr gave the home side a two-goal lead after two periods of play. Stephanie Ayres replied for James Bay 5:32 to go, but that’s as close as they would get as the Queens captured the win in their Showcase opener.

GAME 4--Midget A: WSC Queens 6 Schreiber 2—Playing up an age-level the Winning Streak Charters bantam AA Queens scored five third period goals en route to the triumph over Schreiber.

The two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 after two periods with Samatha Isbell striking for the Queens and Crystal Roen converting for the North Stars.

Thunder Bay would take control notching those five markers in a 13-minute span courtesy of two tallies by Lydia Johnson, who also added an assist, while Sarah Doyle, Karli Nummikoski and Whitney Scott added singles. Harley Wilson had the other Schreiber goal, which came in the final minute.

GAME 5--Bantam A: Hearst 2 Taranis Queens 1—Natasha Bosnick’s goal with 11:05 remaining was the difference as Hearst slipped by the Taranis Queens.

Alessa Dalcourt gave the Ice Cats the lead early in second period only to see Monica Browczuk notch the equalizer with 44 seconds to go in the middle session.

GAME 6--Bantam A: Triad Queens 2 Dryden 1—The peewee Queens improved to 2-0 at the Showcase after posting the narrow victory over the Sunset Granite Snipers.

Madeline Brwoczuk struck 30 seconds into the contest to put Thunder Bay on top, but Dryden would pull level later in the stanza thanks to Anika Tardiff’s power play effort at 11:17.

Following a scoreless middle period, the Queens’ Tia Lampo would fire home the game-winner at 3:19 finishing off the work of Hanna Johnston who drew an assist.

GAME 7--Midget A: OPG Queens 6 Schreiber 1—The OPG Queens got goals from six different skaters and moved to 2-0 in midget A play with the triumph over Schreiber.

Alyssa Westerback, Karly Vis, Marielle Orr, Bradie Butler, Cassy Curtis and Taylor Basaraba all found the back of the net for Thunder Bay. Vis also dished out a pair of helpers for a three-point game.

Dayle Chouinard had the lone tally for the North Stars who fell dropped their second game of the day.

GAME 8--Midget A: WSC Queens 5 James Bay 2—The WSC Queens picked up their second victory of the Showcase in defeating James Bay, who slipped to 0-2.

Karli Nummikoski, with a pair, Kayla Koevoet Claire Sandelovich and Allison Pages scored for Thunder Bay while Emily Oleksukchipped in with two assists.

Ciji Fortier and Lola Blais notched the markers for James Bay.

GAME 9--Midget AA: Shattuck-St. Mary's 3 Winnipeg 0—The Sabres got goals in each period and kept Winnipeg off the score sheet in posting the first shutout of the Showcase.

Ryan Little tallied twice for Shattuck while Sloan Sullivan fired the other marker in the victory.

GAME 10--Midget AA: Sportop Queens 4 Eastman 0—The second shutout of day one came minutes after the first as Megan Leikkari shut the door on the Eastman Selects.

Thunder Bay got a three-goal, one assist performance by captain Michela Cava in the win. Kaitlyn Tougas added the other effort for the Queens

GAME 11--Bantam A: Triad Queens 3 Fort Frances 1—The Triad peewee Queens improved to 3-0 in bantam A division play with a two-goal victory over Fort Frances.

Scoring for Thunder Bay were Karadyn Kiviaho, with a pair, and Alyssa Cicigoi. Aden Johnson picked up the win in net.

Jessica Coran had the lone goal for the Fort while Shanleigh Fryer was in net.

GAME 12--Bantam A: Hearst 2 Dryden 0—The final game of day one was yet another shutout as Hearst improved to 2-0 with the win in bantam A division play.

Kayla Jacques did not allow a goal in the Ice Cats’ net while Natasha Bosnick fired home both goals for Hearst in the victory.
