Queen's take opener in Stoney Creek, Ont.

STONEY CREEK, Ont. – Tia Lampo tallied twice and added an assist to help the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens defeat the Madison Capitols 5-1 Friday afternoon in Day 1 play at the 12th annual Stoney Creek Sabres Showcase.

After Jayda McArthur opened the scoring with the lone marker of the first period, Thunder Bay broke it open in the middle session on two Lampo’s two markers as well as a single from Molly Kunnas.

The Queens continued to carry the play against the club from Wisconsin making it 5-0 two and a half minutes into the final frame courtesy of Julia Siciliano.

Madison dashed Aden Johnson’s shutout bid with 5:35 remaining in the contest.

Johnson did however only allow the one against in picking up the victory in net for the squad.

Next up for Thunder Bay will be an 8:30 p.m. meeting tonight vs. the Mississauga Chiefs.

Two more contests will be on the squad’s slate Saturday, beginning with 12:15 p.m. encounter with the California Wave. That will be followed by a 5:55 p.m. match-up vs. the Toronto Aeros.

Further games for the Sportop Queens at the Stoney Creek Showcase will be based on their round robin results.

A total of 64 midget AA clubs from across Canada and the U.S. will be competing in the three-day event, which runs Friday through Sunday in Stoney Creek and Hamilton, Ont.
