THUNDER BAY -- The St. Ignatius Falcons may be mired in a three-way tie for top spot in the junior football standings, but it’s clear their not ready to give up being the overwhelming league favourites.
Alex Gingras scored on a 71-yard run and quarterback Jordan Maki connected for a pair of touchdowns on Thursday as the Falcons humiliated the Sir Winston Churchill Trojans 43-0 at Fort William Stadium.
The win improved the Falcons record to 2-0, while the Trojans, who were held to -40 yards of total offence, slipped to 0-3.
Maki hit Trent Savard for a 64-yard passing play to open the scoring in the first quarter then found Jakob Anton for a 44-yard catch-and-run to the end zone for a quick 13-0 lead.
Special teams also pitched in, Cameron Hughes snagging a 24-yard interception that turned into a pick-six and Liam Puskas took a punt 34 yards for another score.
St. Patrick 33, Westgate 6: The Saints picked up their second win of the season, thanks in part to Collin Wiseman who tossed a couple of touchdown passes in the first half.
Matt Sacino added a 12-yard touchdown run and then scored on a 59-yard punt return to help the Saints jump to 2-1. Westgate is 0-2.
