With two of Brock’s three leading scorers sidelined, the No. 8 Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s basketball team took full advantage, winning by a one-sided 64-45 margin, Friday night at St. Catharines, Ontario. With the win Lakehead (15-4) continues to lead the OUA West Division with Brock (8-11) tied for fifth with Laurier and Waterloo and in danger of missing the playoffs.

Lakehead’s team defence was stellar as Clinton Springer-Williams and Didi Mukendi, Brock’s leading and third-leading scorers were held out with injuries. The Badgers’ second-leading scorer Mike Cruikshank could not step up in their absence and was harassed into a one-point, 0-7 shooting effort by the tenacious Wolves.

Offensively, Lakehead got a big night from sophomore post Yoosrie Salhia, who scored 14 points with eight rebounds. Senior guard Jamie Searle added 12 points including four three-pointers to pace an 8-15 LU effort from long range. Lakehead shot a sizzling 52.1 per cent overall from the field while holding the hosts to a dismal 25.4 per cent clip.

Andrew Ferguson’s 10 points were tops on the Badgers.

The ‘Wolves jumped out to a 22-8 lead through one quarter and continued to build their lead through the following two quarters. Up 60-36 after 30 minutes, LU shut it down during the fourth, managing just 4 points as Brock scored nine to make the final score slightly closer.

Lakehead did a solid job in the rebounding department, beating Brock 34-28 though the Badgers held a 13-8 advantage on the offensive glass during a free-flowing game that saw just 17 free throws taken between the two teams. Brock went 5-7 at the charity stripe to LU’s 6-10.

The Thunderwolves will aim for the sweep Saturday night at 8 p.m.
