The Superior Collegiate Gryphons couldn’t hold onto the ball on Friday afternoon.
It was costly.
The St. Ignatius Falcons took advantage of five first-half turnovers, scoring points each time to roll over the Gryphons 31-0 at Fort William Stadium.
Nic Cull led the way offensively, scoring twice on the ground, including a 20-yard, second-quarter run with a Superior player draped all over him.
The win was the two-time defending champion Falcons’ 11th straight regular-season win, a streak that dates back to 2011.
“It was a good game, it went well,” said Cull, who finished with 76 yards rushing on seven carries. “We just have to keep it up and don’t let it go to our heads.”
Falcons coach Mike Savioli said his team’s defence was outstanding.
“We were able to put pressure on and then some miscues by them putting the ball on the ground and we were lucky enough to recover,” he said. “But you know, we’ve played well enough defensively the last few weeks, but we know next week Westgate is going to be much more difficult.”
St. Ignatius’ first score came as a result of a Tom Colquhoun interception, Anthony Valente rumbling in from 14 yards out after the Falcons took possession.
Miscommunication between Colquhoun and his running back led to a second turnover, the pitch hitting the turf where Jayden Wojceicowski snapped it up, leading to Cull’s first score of the game, a 17-yard run down the left side of the field.
The Falcons, plagued by ball movement issues the rest of the way, only managed rouge points off the next three turnovers, but led comfortably 30-0 at the half.
For Savioli, it was a chance to see what his entire roster could do.
“It was a good game. We were able to play all of our guys and they all stepped up. Even though we weren’t getting a lot of first downs in the second half, I’m still proud of the way they played. They competed and were working hard.”
The Falcons finished with 188 total yards on the day, all on the ground. Their defence held the Gryphons to just 11.
Jessie Massaro wscored the game's final major, rumbling in from a yard out at the end of the first half.
