In a region known for its long, cold winters, it’s no surprise that skiers and hockey players are front and centre in this year’s Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame inductee class.

Freestyle skier Amber Peterson and Nordic combined specialist Jason Myslicki both represented Canada at the Winter Olympic Games.

Former goalie John Adams, who spent time with both Boston and Washington, is the third person selected in this year’s athlete category.

In the builder’s category, Dryden’s Bill Salonen, who has spent more than half a century devoted to coaching, and former North Dakota hockey coach Gino Gasparini get this year’s nods.

The 1996-97 Air Canada Cup champion Thunder Bay Kings Midget AAA squad earned the honour in the team category.

The Kings team included the likes of future NHLer Jeff Heerema .

The induction ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the Valhalla Inn. Tickets are available by calling 622-2852 or at the Hall of Fame on May Street next to city hall.
