Cold weather will delay the start of Saturday’s Sleeping Giant Loppett.

Event organizers on Friday said with overnight temperatures predicted to hit -23 C, the extra hour should help thaw things out a bit.

“This will allow thing to warm up substantially for the race start and make for a better event for participants and volunteers alike,” said sponsorship and marketing co-ordinator Marianne Stewart in an email sent out to media.

“With a forecasted high on Saturday of -5 C, delaying the start will allow everyone to enjoy the best part of the day on the trails rather than worrying about how they’re going to stay warm.”

The delay also means the park and ride service will leave town an hour later than originally scheduled.

The 50-kilometre classic race is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start, with other event waves beginning at 11 a.m.
