Although they may not have hoisted the cup themselves, local NHLers say they are excited that Patrick Sharp is bringing home the Stanley Cup to Thunder Bay for the third time in five years.

Although they may not have hoisted the cup themselves, local NHLers say they are excited that Patrick Sharp is bringing home the Stanley Cup to Thunder Bay for the third time in five years.

Jordan Staal, still on crutches after a collision during a playoff game against Montreal, said he was cheering for Chicago when they took on the Flyers in the finals. Staal, who brought the Cup to Thunder Bay last year, said watching Sharp with the Cup on Wednesday night was great.

"No question it couldn’t happen to a better guy to win the cup," Staal said. "It’s an amazing feeling you can’t really describe and I’m happy he got to be a part of that."

Alex Auld said he was happy when Staal and his brother Eric won the Cup previously, but added that Sharp’s win means a little more to him personally. Because the two are the same age, they grew up playing together. He said it was great to see someone that close win it all.

"To watch a guy you were that close with win is pretty special," Auld said.

Auld said he can tell that Sharp and his fellow Blackhawks are having a lot of fun on the ice by the way they celebrated Wednesday night’s win and the way they play together.

Auld added that he expects Chicago to be a winning team for years to come.
