It’s official, defenceman Marc Staal has a new six-year, $34.2-millon deal with the New York Rangers.
The NHL club made the widely expected announcement on Sunday, after their 5-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“Marc has been one of the cornerstones of our team since he arrived in New York,” Rangers GM Glen Sather said in a release.
“His commitment and perseverance to the Rangers, and the game of hockey, has been an inspiration for everyone in the organization, and he has become a role model for young players and veterans alike. We are excited that he will continue to provide that leadership in a Rangers uniform.”
The Thunder Bay native, a first-round pick in 2005, is one of the longest-serving active Rangers, with 503 games played.
He’s scored 29 goals and added 90 assists over his seven-year stint on Broadway, one of just 12 Rangers to surpass the 500-game mark with the team.
The 6-foot-4, 207-pound Staal has two goals and eight points in 43 games this season, one of six players to dress for every Rangers game in 2014-15.
