The Fort William North Stars have advanced to Friday evening’s Dudley Hewitt Cup semi-finals game thanks to a goal-differential tie-breaker.
The power to secure a spot in the tournament’s playoff was wrestled away from the North Stars when they fell to the Oakville Blades Thursday. That loss gave them a round-robin tournament record of 1-2.
The host Soo Thunderbirds, however, defeated the Abitibi Eskimos Thursday evening, which led to a three-way tie between the North Stars, Thunderbirds and Eskimos.
The goal differential tie-breaker sent both the Thunderbirds and North Stars to the semifinals, which takes place Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie.
