It’s all about how you finish.
That was the lesson for the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team, as they were outgunned in the final quarter to fall short in Winnipeg.
The Brandon Bobcats put up 24 fourth quarter points to sneak past the Thunderwolves by a 60-53 margin in the BOB FM Shootout, which is hosted by the University of Winnipeg.
"We executed a good first half game plan but failed to throw the knockout punch. In the second half we got out-worked and played soft,” said head coach Jon Kreiner in a media release."
Brandon’s Cassie Cook led all scorers with 22 points, and also grabbed six boards.
Veteran guard Ayse Kalkin was the driving force for Lakehead, as she recorded a double-double by matching 16 points with 16 rebounds.
The two teams started slowly offensively, as Lakehead went into the halftime break with a slim 23-19 lead.
The offence of both teams sparked in the second half, culminated by Brandon’s fourth quarter outburst to claim a lead the Bobcats would not relinquish.
The Thunderwolves drop to 0-2 for the tournament after dropping a 67-59 decision to the host Winnipeg squad on Friday.
Lakehead will close the weekend tournament with a date against the Manitoba Bisons on Sunday morning.
