THUNDER BAY -- The winning rinks included Ben Mikkelsen, Mike McCarville, Colin Koivula, Gary Weiss and Krtista McCarville as the Tbaytel Major League of Curling kicked off its 42nd season Wednesday night at the Port Arthur Curling Club.

Four of the five games in the first draw of round robin play in the 10-team competitive league went the full eight ends. Here are the game summaries.

Ben Mikkelsen won the battle of returning skips over Al Macsemchuk 7-6. Mikkelsen skipping a new combination with Greg Doran, Matt Johnson and Devin Doran came back from a 6-3 deficit with back-to-back steals in the seventh and eight ends for the victory.

Mike McCarville knocked off the defending league champions Al Hackner 6-5. McCarville got the jump early on the veteran skip posting a 6-1 lead after four ends. However, Hackner made a game of it forcing McCarville, a former major league champ himself, to throw his last rock in the eighth end for the win.

Colin Koivula needed an extra end to down the Mike Pozihun senior squad 7-4. The Pozihun rink skipped by Denis Malette forced the extra frame with a deuce in the eight end in what a closely played contest.

The Gary Weiss rink came up a three in the eight end to hold off a determined Hailey Beaudry foursome 9-6. Beaudry's Lakehead University squad had scored a three in the seventh end to deadlock the game at 6.

Krista McCarville dominated the Larissa Mikkelsen foursome running up a 13-1 score in a game that went seven ends. McCarville showed the teams competitive edge of having played two World Curling Tour events by jumping out to a 6-0 lead after three ends.

Draw 2 of round robin play in the 10-team Tbaytel Major League is set for a 6:30 pm draw this coming Wednesday at the Port Arthur Curling Club.
