Thunder Bay skiers slog through classic races in Canmore

Under light cloud and in warming weather, competition at the Canadian Ski National Championships in Canmore continued Tuesday with the medium distance classic races.

CANMORE -- Under light cloud and in warming weather, competition at the Canadian Ski National Championships in Canmore continued Tuesday with the medium distance classic races.

The day started off with another strong performance by Big Thunder Nordic Ski Club’s (BTNSC) Erik Schlyter, who placed 7th out of a whopping 99 Juvenile boys. Charlotte Johnston was 84th out of 114 Juvenile Girls

In ever-softening conditions, Kai Meekis was the top Thunder Bay skier in the Junior Boy’s category, placing 17th of 96 athletes. Martti Muzyka, Fred Serratore, and Aleksi Luoma of BTNSC, and Niklas Harkonen of Lappe Nordic Ski Club also fought their way through the increasingly mushy trails. Heidi Stewart of BTNS was the lone Junior girl representing Thunder Bay and skied to 34th in a field of 71.

Under the warm afternoon sun, Annika Richardson and Lisle Compton of the National Team Development Centre Thunder Bay (NTDC Thunder Bay) showed their stuff, seizing the gold and the silver, respectively, in the Junior Women’s category. Skiing in the same field, Hannah Shields of Lappe Nordic had a solid 11th place result.

Thunder Bay based skiers also did well in the Senior Women’s category, where NTDC’s Katherine Stewart Jones claimed the silver. Lappe Nordic’s Jennifer Jackson skied to 7th place, closely followed by NTDC’s Sadie White (8th), and Alannah MacLean (9th ).

In the Junior Men’s competition, Levi Nadlersmith (NTDC) was the top Thunder Bay athlete, placing 8th. Graham Ritchie (BTNSC) and Fergus Foster (NTDC) also competed in the Junior Men’s field.

The closely contested Senior Men’s competition was won by Devon Kershaw of the Canadian National Team. The top Thunder Bay results were by NTDC/Lappe Nordic athletes Michael Somppi and Evan Palmer-Charrette in 5th and 7th places, respectively. NTDC’s Bob Thompson was 20th, while Andy Shields of Lappe Nordic was 23rd. NTDC’s Julian Smith and Angus Foster, and Lappe Nordic's Gavin Shields also raced in the Senior Men’s category.

Finally, in the Canadian College and University Championships (CCUNC) category, the women Thunderwolves were strong. Jennifer Jackson placed 2nd, Lisle Compton was 3rd, Makaila Hudson was 13th and Erika Mihell was 18th. On the Men’s side, Gavin Shields (12th), Noah Thompson (13th), and Noah Taylor (16th ) all made the top 20. Levi Warkentine, Geoffrey Way- Nee, Sean Carter and Hayden Gorman also competed for the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

With only a short time to rest, the Junior and Senior Women and Men race again Wednesday in the exciting Classic Sprint event. After time trials in the morning, the head to head heats will run into the afternoon. Juniors and Juvenile sprints run Thursday.
