Thunderbirds hold off Thunderwolves

With 1:48 to go on Saturday night, the Lakehead Thunderwolves were 12 points down.

But there were no thoughts of letting the clock run out and making their way back over the Rockies to Thunder Bay.

Ben Johnson and Dwayne Harvey had key steals that led to baskets and Matt Schmidt, who led the Wolves with 23 points, nailed a three-pointer to pull LU to within two points of the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds with 24 seconds to play.

But, after Isaiah Solomon missed a free-throw with five seconds left on the clock, Harvey was unable to bury a last-second, buzzer beating three to send the game to overtime and the Thunderwolves lost their second straight non-conference game in a row, falling 84-81 to end pre-season play.

Lakehead trailed 15-10 after the first and 38-29 at the half.
