OTTAWA – The second-half just isn’t going the Lakehead Thunderwolves way.

The Wolves on Friday night dropped their third straight out of the Christmas break, doubled up 8-4 by the Ottawa Gee Gees to dip into a seventh-place tie with the suddenly hot Waterloo Warriors.

It was a five-goal second by Ottawa that sank visiting Lakehead.

After Ottawa’s Marc Beckstead scored first, beating Thunderwolves goalie Justin McDonald at the 9:11 mark of the opening period, LU’s Justin Sefton and Cody Alcock scored 84 seconds apart to give LU the lead after 20 minutes.

The Gee Gees struck quickly in the second. Cody Drover beat McDonald just 31 seconds into the period and Brendan Jacombe put Ottawa in front again slightly more than two minutes later.

Carson Dubchak knotted the score again at 7:43 of the second, but it was all Ottawa from there in the middle stanza.

Michael Poirier scored twice, with Thunder Bay’s Connor Sills and Jacob Hanlon adding singles as the Gee Gees jumped in front 7-3 after two.

Billy Jenkins, with his second of the season, and Kevin Domingue, traded goals in the third.

McDonald stopped just 35 of 43 shots he faced. Anthony Brodeur took the win in the Ottawa net, facing just 28 shots.

Ottawa was 2-for-3 on the power play, the Wolves 1-for-3.

The Thunderwolves (8-9-1) will take on Ottawa (9-7-3) in a Saturday rematch at the Sports Complex Arena.
