Lakehead’s offence proved it could hang with the OUA’s most potent attack.
Their defence? Not so much.
The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team earned its first trip to the University Cup on Saturday night, racing to a 4-0 first-period lead and hanging on to beat the Thunderwolves 7-4 in the OUA bronze-medal game.
The Ravens, led by a pair from Mitch Porowski and two more from Joey West, earned the wild-card spot at the University Cup, slated to begin next weekend in Saskatoon.
The Wolves got two goals from rookie Cody Alcock and singles from Keith Grondin and Mike Hammond. Damian Cross, Michael McNamee and Corey Durocher, into the open net, also scored for Carleton.
Alcock, Grondin and Hammond scored 2:19 apart to start the second, clawing to within a goal, but the Ravens responded with two more of their own before the period came to a close.
Alcock scored early in the third, but the Wolves could manage no more on the Ravens, the No. 2 defensive team in the league this season.
Rookie Justin McDonald got the start for Lakehead, subbing for an injured Jeff Bosch. He allowed six goals on 39 shots.
