Thunderwolves hockey schedule released, Gee Gees not to make local stop

The Lakehead Thunderwolves will open the 2016-17 OUA hockey campaign with a pair of home dates Oct. 14 and 15 against the Windsor Lancers.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves will open the 2016-17 OUA hockey campaign with a pair of home dates Oct. 14 and 15 against the Windsor Lancers.

The team on Thursday unveiled its scheduled for the upcoming campaign, hoping it delivers better results than last season’s, which guided the former perennial powerhouse squad out of the playoffs for the first time since hockey returned to Lakehead in 2001-02.

The Wolves will end their regular season on Feb. 10 and 11 when they host the Western Mustangs, runner-up finishers in the OUA West in 2015-16.

Other opponents scheduled to land at Fort William Gardens include the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, Guelph Gryphons, Brock Badgers, Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions.

The Thunderwolves will face Ryerson, Toronto, Concordia, RMC and Laurier. Lakehead will also visit the Ottawa Gee Gees, who return to the OUA after a two-year absence, prompted by sexual assault allegations during the team’s 2014 visit to Thunder Bay.

Lakehead will also non-conference games against the Lethbridge Pronghorns (Sept. 30 and Oct. 1), Manitoba Bison (Oct. 7 and 8) and Nipissing Lakers (Dec. 29 and 30).
