Thundewolves capture ACHA DII title

Michelle Carlson named tournament MVP after scoring eight goals and 10 points to lead LU to a championship in its inaugural season south of the border.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Lakehead Thunderwolves sure know how to make an entrance.

The women’s hockey team on Sunday capped a spectacular inaugural season at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II national championship in Columbus, Ohio, downing North Dakota State University 3-1 in Sunday’s final.

Jacqueline Desimone opened the scoring for LU at 10:27 of the first, with second-period singles going to Allison Pages and Liv Carter.

The Wolves, who led 3-0 heading into the final frame, surrendered a goal to NDSU’s Jessica Binstock 7:26 into the third, the long goal to get past Lakehead goalie Callie Bevilacqua, who made 19 saves.

Lakehead downed Northern Michigan University 6-1 on Saturday to advance to the final.

Lakehead’s Michelle Carlson was named tournament MVP, scoring eight goals and adding two assists at the championship.
