Two quick goals, eight seconds apart in the first minute of the third period, proved to be the difference as the St. Mary’s Academy Flames of Winnipeg  defeated the Sportop midget AA Queens 5-3 Saturday evening in Game 2 of a three-game weekend set at Fort William First Nation Arena.

After taking the opener 4-3 Saturday morning, the Flames grabbed the early lead on Saturday, thanks to a Saige Patrick effort at 5:14.

Thunder Bay responded before the opening stanza was complete on Paige Sullivan tally.

Manitoba took the lead again with the lone marker of the middle session, coming off the stick of Randi Marcon.

St. Mary’s struck quickly in the third, getting rapid-fire goals from Danielle Krzyszczyk and Kayla Friesen to take control.

After Cecilia Lopez made it 5-1 the Queens answered with a pair of late markers from Kaity Howarth and Samantha Isbell to round out the scoring.

Thunder Bay held the edge in the shots on goal department by a 33-30 margin, with Anna Kulas picking up the win for the Flames and Sydney Isbell suffering the loss for the Queens.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game set Sunday at 10:30 a.m. back at FWFNA.
