It came down to the final rock, but Krista McCarville remains undefeated at the Ontario Scotties after a nail-biter against Mississauga’s Catherine Auld Tuesday.

Trailing 6-3 after the seventh end, McCarville scored two in the eighth and in the ninth to enter the final end in a tie. McCarville had two in the house as Auld, with the hammer, made her final shot. Auld took out one of McCarville’s rocks but knocked her second closer to give McCarville the steal and end the game at 7-6.

Even though she was down by three late in the game, McCarville said she wasn’t nervous.

"One of our goals is to never give up so no matter what we fight to the end," said McCarville. "We just wanted to make her have a difficult shot in the end and we did give her a difficult shot and she missed it."

The two rinks battled back and forth early in the game with points having to be measured in both the second (one going to McCarville) and fourth (point going to Auld) ends. It was tied at two after the fourth, just before Auld stole two in the fifth after McCarville couldn’t clean up.

Against such a strong rink, Auld now 2-1, McCarville said she wasn’t playing her best.
"It was a tough one. I mean we didn’t play our best so we definitely have to pick it up because they’re a great team and I know we’ll be playing them again hopefully in the playoffs," McCarville said.

The only other undefeated team, Sudbury’s Tracy Horgan, handed Thunder Bay’s Marlo Dahl her third straight loss Tuesday afternoon. Ending the game 10-5 after eight ends, Dahl said she’s not discouraged with her rink’s record.

She said the team came out strong but two bad misses on her part in the eighth, where Horgan took three, finished the game.

Dahl said there are still six games left for her team and they have to win them all.

"We can’t even try we have to go undefeated," said Dahl. "We have to just stay together as a team and make every single shot."

Dahl faces McCarville Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Port Arthur Curling Club.
