Expectations are high in the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s volleyball camp.

On Friday the team lived up to them.

Following a straight-set loss the day before, the Wolves rebounded with a five-set win over the RMC Paladins on Day 2 of the McMaster Invitational in Hamilton.

Jen Casey scored 19 points on 16 kills, a block and two aces, while Sarah Reid contributed 12 points on nine kills, two blocks and an ace. Setter Vanessa Masters added 32 assists in the win, while defender Breanne Hilhorst made 27 digs and had two assists.

“We had large leads in the first and second sets. We managed to hang on in the first but in the second unfortunately gave up a nine-point run to RMC making the game closer than it had to be,” coach Chris Green said in a release.

“Clearly RMC had the wherewithal to mount a comeback and we made horrendous choices to lose the lead. The third set saw us take a commanding lead and not relent."

Green said he was happy his young team showed it can come out and compete.

“Kudos to the entire team for contributing to a victory, and I feel the young players learned a lot about the game and their roles. Some of the experienced players also grew today. It was nice to Jen Casey take a step ahead in her game's maturation.”

LU won the first set 25-23, the third set 25-11 and the decisive fifth set 15-6. RMC took the second set 25-22 and the fourth 25-23.
Lakehead plays for fifth place Saturday against the Brock Badgers.
