The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s volleyball team made sure that RMC’s winning ways were short-lived, Friday night as they beat the Paladins 3-1 at the C. J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay. Set scores were 25-22, 21-25, 25-16 and 28-26 as the Thunderwolves (2-16) moved two points ahead of RMC (1-17) in the OUA East.

Last week the Paladins picked up their first conference win in 111 tries as they hosted Windsor, but a strong offensive game ensured from Lakehead sophomore Vanessa Chorkawy and a balanced defence denied RMC a two-game winning streak. Chorkawy had 21 including 19 kills to lead the charge while senior middle Karla Brayshaw and freshman Sarah Reid both had nine points.

Freshman setter Jenna McDonald had an excellent overall game with 32 assists and 21 digs to lead the Pack in both categories. Playing the first game of her final series with the Thunderwolves, fifth-year senior Ashley Baer had 17 digs.

Paladins middle Melissa McCoy was solid in picking up 19 points and 21 digs while Kelsey Chang had 37 digs.

Lakehead will look for the season-ending sweep on Saturday’s senior night. Action starts at 7 p.m.
