THUNDER BAY -- Jon Kreiner continues to turn to the local talent pool to stock his Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball squad.

On Thursday the Thunder Bay count grew by one, with the team announcing Hammarskjold’s Kielly McDonough has committed to play for the team next fall.

It’s a dream come true, the teenager said.

“"Since I started the Junior Wolves program in grade 10 I've always enjoyed the coaches and everyone on the Thunderwolves team. I can’t wait to officially become a Thunderwolf and continue playing competitive basketball in my hometown."

A graduate of the Junior Wolves program, McDonough should ease into the Lakehead lineup, Kreiner said in a release.

"Kielly has worked hard and has come on late as a basketball player but she has all the tools. Kielly's strong, fit, smart and does many things well. She’s a great team player who will work very hard at her skills development. We are very happy and excited to have Kielly join the Thunderwolves women’s basketball family.”

Her high school coach, Bruno Corbing, said McDonough is the type of player everyone wants on their team.

““Kielly McDonough is the type of athlete that every coach wants on their team," Corbin said. "Every time she steps on the floor she brings her high energy and determined work ethic. This approach made Kielly an invaluable member of the Hammarskjold Vikings for the past two seasons and a key contributor to two consecutive city championships.

“She welcomes the challenge of guarding the opposing team’s best player and more often than not shuts them down with her tenacious defense. Kielly’s commitment to basketball has paid off and she will be a great addition to the Thunderwolves family.”
