Katie Ulakovic and the first-place Lakehead Thunderwolves spotted the Ottawa Gee Gees a 7-0 lead on Friday night.
It turns out they’d each and every one of the Thunder Bay guard’s eight three-pointers, eking out a 68-65 road win, their third straight to start the second half, to improve to 7-3.
Ulakovic, who finished with 24 points, nailed the winning basket in the final minute from beyond the arc, helping the Wolves complete an arduous comeback that saw them trail until late in the fourth.
It helped make up for Ottawa’s smothering defensive effort against LU’s star guard Jylisa Williams, who finished with a season-low 13 points, including zero in the opening quarter.
Williams did complete the double-double, grabbing 10 boards, and added five assists into the mix. Katelyn Andrea also hit double digits, finishing with 10, while Corina Bruni had nine rebounds and 11 assists.
Stephanie MacDonald and Krista van Slingerland had 17 points apiece for the Gee Gees, who also lost to Lakehead in the final at a Christmas tournament in Halifax.
The Wolves remain in the nation’s capital on Saturday to take on Carleton.
