SUDBURY, Ont. -- The Laurentian Voyageurs found a winning recipe against the Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team.
Hit lots of threes and keep Jylisa Williams in check.
The Voyageurs rode that strategy to a 66-61 victory over the Thunderwolves in Sudbury on Saturday night, squashing Lakehead’s hopes of closing out their pre-Christmas schedule with back-to-back wins.
Laurentian shot 46 per cent from beyond the arc, holding a decisive advantage over a Lakehead team that struggled by going just 2-for-15 from long range. The Voyageurs were led by Danielle Harris and Adrienne Moreau, who combined to sink 11 of their 20 three-point attempts.
Williams paced Lakehead with 29 points but constant defensive pressure from Laurentian resulted in her only shooting 9-of-25 from the floor. She led the team with four assists and five steals.
Lakehead was in a hole early as the Voyageurs opened the game on a 14-2 run. The Thunderwolves would claw back to only be down 25-24 at the half.
The Voyageurs opened the lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Thunderwolves 19-14 in the frame to open a lead Lakehead could not erase.
Lakehead hits the break with a 4-3 mark.
