KINGSTON, Ont. – Lily Gruber-Schulz and newcomer Leashja Grant each delivered a double-double Friday night, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

The Lakehead Thunderwolves got a combined five points from their bench and dropped their OUA season opener 77-61 on the road to the Queen’s Gaels, despite a solid effort from their forward corps.

Grant, a Bahamian import with NCAA experience, had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Gruber-Schulz topped all Thunderwolves scorers with 17 points, also grabbing 10 boards.

Lakehead jumped in front 19-18 after one, but were outscored 30-14 in the decisive second quarter, the Gaels adding nine to their lead in the third.

Marianne Alarie led all scorers with 21 off the bench for Queen’s, who got 40 points from their reserves.

Lakehead heads to York on Saturday for a date with the Lions.
