In their first game of the
Eric Garland tournament in Fredericton, N.B. on Friday, the Lakehead Thunderwolves handily defeated the host UNB Varsity Reds 80-62.
In the victory, Cam Hornby was given player of the game honors with
15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Other notables included
Brendan King with 15 points and five rebounds (3-5 3FG), Venzal Russell
with seven points and 10 boards and Yoosrie Salhia with nine points and eight rebounds.
Dan Quirion had 11 points for UNB.
LU coach Scott Morrison's take on the game was mixed, but positive overall:
"At
times during the game I was really pleased with how we played. Our
rebounding was better than last weekend but our turnovers and decision
making with the ball also need work. We had some sloppy stretches in
our transition d as well and need to be able to stick to our defensive
game plan for 40 minutes. Part of that responsibility falls on the
coaching staff to substitute intelligently and we need to improve that
going forward as well."
The Wolves take on the University of Cape Breton Capers on Saturday at 5 p.m.
