The Guelph Gryphons made it entertaining, but fell a goal short Saturday night.
Matt Caria, Luke Judson, Keith Grondin, Trevor Gamache and Jay Gilbert gave the Lakehead Thunderwolves a 5-2 lead after two periods.
The Wolves (2-0-0) then hung on in the third to escape with a 5-4 win over the Gryphons and a weekend road sweep to kick off their 2012-13 campaign.
Judson had a goal and two assists for Lakehead, while fellow newcomer Mike MacDonald earned a pair of helpers.
Thunder Bay’s Justin Gvora netted Guelph’s first marker, tying the game 1-1 on the power play at 16:31 of the first.
Edward Gale, Brett Appio and Andy Bathgate, the grandson of the former NHL great of the same name, were the other Gryphons goal scorers.
Lakehead’s home opener is scheduled for Friday night at Fort William Gardens against the York Lions.
