Wolves, Lions extend series to limit

TORONTO – The York Lions and Lakehead Thunderwolves are going the distance.

The host Lions on Saturday night staved off elimination, scoring twice in the third to double up their opponent 4-2 in Game 2 of their best-of-three OUA West quarterfinal series.

Alex Mowbray netted the winner, beating Nic Renyard with nine minutes to go in regulation. Kyle Campbell iced with an empty netter with eight seconds to play.

The two teams traded goals in the first and second period.

Morgan Messenger struck first, his goal coming with five minutes to play in the period. But just 72 seconds later the Wolves pulled even, rookie Scott Gall netting his first of the post-season.

Colton Vannucci edged the Lions in front 2:04 into the third, but Trevor Hynnes tied it up with 6:05, their final goal of the night.

Mack Shields made 21 stops to earn the while Renyard made 31 saves for the Thunderwolves.

The win ties the series at a game apiece. The two teams will decide the outcome on Sunday night in Toronto.
