WATERLOO, Ont. – Kelin Ainsworth has been the Lakehead Thunderwolves top scorer all season long.
He came through when it mattered on Saturday night.
The fifth-year forward scored what proved to be the winning goal, his eighth of the campaign, with 4:43 to go in regulation and the Wolves hung on to complete a weekend sweep of the host Laurier Golden Hawks, edging their OUA West rivals 4-3.
After Derek Schoenmakers staked the Golden Hawks to an early 1-0 lead, the Wolves fired back with three straight tallies, Carson Dubchak connecting for the second straight night to even the score with 20 seconds to go in the first.
Trevor Hynnes and Dylan Butler added goals 16 seconds apart early in the second to put LU up 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Kyle Morrison got one back for Laurier at the 7:09 mark of the third, beating Justin McDonald in the Thunderwolves net, making a rare start.
After Ainsworth restored the two-goal lead, Christian Mroczkowski tallied his third of the season to make it a one-goal game again.
McDonald made 31 stops for Lakehead, (8-6-1) who did not allow a power-play opportunity to their opponent, picking up just a single coincidental minor in the second.
The fifth-place Wolves were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Vinny Merante took the loss between the pipes for Laurier, (7-7-2) turning aside 31 shots.
