WVB: Wolves swept by Gryphons, eliminated from playoffs

The clock has struck midnight for the Cinderella Lakehead Thunderwolves volleyball team.

Lakehead was eliminated from the playoffs after being swept in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-9) in their first round Ontario university playoff game at the hands of the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday.

The Thunderwolves qualified for the postseason as the final seed in the OUA West after prevailing in a three-team tiebreaker. Lakehead had to win their final two regular season contests to qualify,with one of htem being an upset of the favoured York Lions.

While keeping the first two sets close, the Gryphons were able to pull away with a 6-0 run in each.

The team was led by departing seniors Jorie Daymond, Brittany MacLeod and Sarah Reid, with the trio combining for 13 kills, six service aces and 15 digs.

Gryphons setter Ashleigh Andzel contributed 25 assists in the winning effort.
