To the editor:

United Steelworkers Local 9422 representing mine site personnel at the Lac Des Iles Mine site have concluded a strike vote where 94 per cent of the voting membership authorized the union bargaining committee to commence strike action should the union be unable to reach agreement on the terms and conditions of a new collective agreement.

There are significant issues unresolved regarding health and safety issues at the site as well as quality of life issues pertaining to the employer shift scheduling and monetary issues.

Further meetings between the company and the Union will be held under the direction of a provincial mediator on September 4-6. If no agreement is reached during these sessions then the Union will have no other alternative but to commence strike action against the employer. The Union remains optimistic that the parties will be able to reach a collective agreement however in order to achieve that objective the employer will have to address all critical issues.
