Have you ever been in a place where you have a bad toothache, but you would rather procrastinate going to the dentist because you think it is scary and painful? That behavior is more common than you think. Around 48-60 per cent of people have some form of dental anxiety and fear from the thought that dentistry is painful and scary. Hence, oral care and hygiene is often the last priority on anyone’s list.

However, contrary to popular belief, dental care is extremely important. The mouth is the gateway for bacteria, and your oral health affects the whole health of your body. To make people understand that and provide a more relaxing experience at a dentist, Maheen Cassim, a dental hygienist established the Natural Smiles Boutique in Thunder Bay in 2011.

Unlike a conventional dental office, comfort and a spa-like experience were top priority for Cassim when she established her practice. At Natural Smiles Boutique, oral health care is the primary focus. From daily maintenance to whitening, the boutique offers a range of services for clients to help keep up their dental hygiene.

Everyone’s teeth are different and requires a different routine care, so the boutique offers customized suggestions based on individualistic needs. Cassim believes that a smile can go a long way, hence she does smile analysis and provides clients with the tools they need for their dental care.

Pre-covid, the boutique was indeed a spa-like experience for the fear-stricken patients to go and relax; have a cup of tea and shop around for products that will help their dental care routine. The pandemic changed a lot as people now are afraid of stepping out in proximity and exposing themselves without a mask. “The pandemic also affects our oral health causing more dryness in the mouth which leads to more bacterial infections. So, it is important to take care of our oral health more than ever before,” Maheen Cassim says.

“If you can focus on oral health, then your overall health becomes better. My recommendation is to brush twice daily and use interproximal aids to clean between teeth,” she adds.
