A well-recognized Thunder Bay cannabis dispensary and accessory shop is celebrating a milestone anniversary of being locally owned and having been operating in the city for 30 years.
Rainbow on Bay first opened its doors to the public three decades ago as an adult novelty and bookstore called Rainbow Books. At the time, the store only offered a few cannabis accessories.
Throughout the years, the business eventually evolved into the established cannabis accessory shop it is today, says the store’s bookkeeper Darren Gravelle.
“Over time, it has evolved into a full-blown headshop,” Gravelle says. “It is essentially a cannabis shop, and at one point, we did have a whole bunch of adult stuff in the basement going back 15 to 20 years ago.”
Now, the store contains more than 2,000 products, including more than 400 different bongs, 150 pipes and many types of cannabis.
Rainbow on Bay also has a large selection of edibles, which are food products that have been infused with cannabis extracts. They are a smoke-free alternative to consuming dried-cannabis.
“Nobody even comes to what we are, not even five per cent of what we got,” Gravelle says.
“If you smoke cannabis you need some sort of accessory, even if it's just rolling papers."

In addition to their vast product selection, Gravelle explains how their most knowledgeable staff is always ready to assist.
“If somebody is new to cannabis, we definitely have knowledgeable staff that would be happy to assist them right away,” he says, adding the store has generated several loyal customers over the years.
Gravelle who got involved with the store many years ago through the owner, Frank Marino, has seen the store undergo a great deal of changes throughout the years in including the opening of a second location.
The store has two different locations in Thunder Bay, the flagship store is at 264 Bay Street and a second store is located at 428 Victoria Avenue.
With the 30th anniversary taking place on April 20, Gravelle says, Rainbow on Bay will be celebrating not only the shop's anniversary, but the biggest cannabis event of the year, 4/20.
This all day event will provide customers with the opportunity for 30 per cent off selected accessories, including vaporizers.
The celebration doesn't stop there, throughout the day pizza from Donato's will be available for free and for those with a sweet tooth will be able to purchase a variety of treats from V's Sugar Rush booth.
Employees will be handing out free merchandise throughout the day, but, this won't be the only opportunity to receive a give-away item. Customers can enter their name in to the ballot box to have a chance to win first, second or third prize with an accumulated value of $640.
