Tapestry International Women’s Network and Port Arthur Rotary create bursary to empower newcomer women

By helping remove financial barriers, the Fund seeks to empower newcomer women to build fulfilling career paths and successfully integrate into the workforce and life in Thunder Bay.

The Thunder Bay Community Foundation is proud to announce the creation of a meaningful new Bursary Fund aimed at supporting the educational pursuits of newcomer women in our community. The Tapestry International Women’s Network and Rotary Club of Thunder Bay (Port Arthur) Bursary Fund was established through a collaborative partnership and will provide financial assistance to newcomer women pursuing post-secondary education at the college level. By helping remove financial barriers, the Fund seeks to empower women to build fulfilling career paths and successfully integrate into the workforce and life in Thunder Bay.

This initiative was born from a growing partnership between Tapestry International Women’s Network, an organization dedicated to connecting and supporting women of diverse cultural backgrounds, and the Port Arthur Rotary, a long-standing local service club deeply invested in community development and education.

“Hector Dougall, President Port Arthur Rotary, and I are so pleased to support this bursary with Tapestry International Women’s Network on behalf of our members,” said Shelley Crawford, Special Projects Lead for the Port Arthur Rotary.

“Rotary’s commitment to education and enabling newcomer women to find a career path in our community through a college program of study, found traction with this new partnership that unfolded over the last few years. We encourage individuals and businesses to add to this Fund through the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. Thanks to all our partners in their support of the bursary program.”

Roopa Rakshit of the Tapestry International Women’s Network added, “When we work together, we go further. This is a great community partnership, which means more chances, more support, and a brighter academic future for newcomer women.”

The Thunder Bay Community Foundation will manage the Bursary Fund and will work together with the Tapestry International Women’s Network and the Port Arthur Rotary to ensure that contributions are directed toward impactful and equitable educational support for newcomer women. The Fund is open for public contributions, inviting donors who share the vision of a more inclusive and empowered community to participate in growing its impact.

“We are deeply grateful for the inspiring partnership between the Tapestry International Women’s Network and the Port Arthur Rotary in establishing this Bursary Fund at the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. The creation of this Bursary is a testament of what can happen when community organizations collaborate and work together towards a common goal. This Fund represents more than financial support — it’s a powerful act of welcome, empowerment, and belief in the potential of women who are building new lives in our community,” says Athena Kreiner, CEO of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation.
