Do you own a home or cottage on a lake in Northwestern Ontario? Then you will be interested in an information session about the threat of blue/green algae to your property values and the use of your lake.
The session will be held Thursday, June 19th at Trinity United Church at 30 S. Algoma Street. The event begins at 7 pm.
Our speakers will be experts from Lakehead University and the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority. They will discuss how climate change is intersecting with our desire for suburban lawn aesthetics, including the use of fertilizer, to create conditions that allow for blue/greed algae to thrive.
The experts will talk about the effects of repeated annual blooms on area lakes and the long-term damage to the quality of the water in our lakes.
We’ll also hear how cottage owners can “re-wild” their lakefronts by replacing lawns with deep-rooted plants native to this region to help slow down the run-off of nutrients into our lakes.
The event is being organized by Trinity United along with the Loon Lake Waterkeepers Conservancy, a new group dedicated to protecting the quality of the water of Loon Lake.
