We are just 3 days away from the early bird registration deadline for the 43rd Annual Sleeping Giant Loppet. Sleeping Giant Provincial Park will be the place to be on Saturday, March 7, 2020.
Trails at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park are in excellent shape with great snow coverage. We just received this updated trail report from Park Superintendent Christian Carl, and if there was ever a year to Ski the Giant, this is the year!
All 62km of skiing trails in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park have been groomed by our Park Maintenance Foreman. The 18km loop around Marie Louise Lake has seen the most passes with the Piston-Bully and is therefore in the best shape with regards to firmness. The Burma Trail and Pickerel Lake Trail are both open for skate and classic though they remain slightly on the soft side at this time (as of January 27, 2020). The Thunder Bay Lookout Road is groomed for both skate and classic. This 9.3km trail (18.6km round-trip) leads you to possibly the most picturesque viewpoint in Ontario accessible on a groomed cross-country skiing trail. The 10km Ferns Lake Loop on the east side of Highway 587 is groomed for classic only.
The park has received over 100cm of snow so far this winter (with compaction and sublimation our current snow-depth is approximately 75cm) and it is a winter-wonderland out here. We are pleased to see the entire ski trail network open this early in the season and are anticipating a Sleeping Giant Loppet for the ages. Come ski it to believe it!
