Thunder Bay wraps up a solid week at XC National Championships

Nine Thunder Bay juniors showed just how tough they are with every athlete completing the long event

GATINEAU, QC. -- The 2019 Canadian Ski Championships at Nakkertok Ski Centre in Quebec wrapped up Wednesday with the marquee event for the Junior athletes. The banner event is the Ski Marathon; the long distance, mass start event, which was a classic race this year. With challenging conditions and the temperatures warming through the day nine Thunder Bay juniors showed just how tough they are with every athlete completing the long event.

The Juvenile girls completed two 5km laps for a 10 km race. Anna Stewart (Big Thunder) was the top local athlete finishing 16th in the country. She was followed by teammate Sarah Cullinan (Big Thunder) in 30th, Carley Kiiskila (Big Thunder) in 36th, and Brooke Ailey (Lappe Nordic) in 55th.
Ainsley Carr (Big Thunder) was the only local skier to compete in the Junior Girls 10 km, finishing 63rd.

Erik Schlyter (Big Thunder) was the lead local athlete in the Junior Boys 15km event finishing just out of the top 10, in 11th place. He was followed by teammates Max Hollmann (Big Thunder) in 24th, Alex Randall in 78th and Matthew Randall in 96th.

This final day of racing marks the end of the National race circuit for the year, with many local senior athletes now heading to Quebec City to represent Canada at the World Cup Finals. World Cup Finals will take place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Plains of Abraham in downtown Quebec City.

Local athletes to watch on the World Stage include Julian Smith (NTDC TBAY), Graham Ritchie (NTDC TBAY), Bob Thompson (NTDC TBAY), Angus Foster (NTDC TBAY/Big Thunder), Evan Palmer-Charrette (Lappe Nordic), Sadie White (NTDC TBAY/Big Thunder), Annika Richardson (NTDC TBAY/Lappe Nordic), Katherine Stewart-Jones (NTDC TBAY/NST),and Alannah MacLean (LakeheadU).
