THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District saw 172 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the weekend.

In its first report since Friday, the district health unit said the number of active cases as of Monday morning stood at 310, a drop of 31.

TBDHU said there were 46 people in hospital for treatment of COVID-19, including seven in intensive care.

The comparable figures on Friday were 53 and six respectively.

During the week of Jan. 16 to 22, the district's COVID-19 positivity test rate was 20.6 per cent compared with 23 per cent the previous week.

Since Jan. 1, under provincial guidelines, PCR testing for the virus has been limited to certain groups.

As a result, TBDHU cautions that its reports of lab-confirmed cases are a significant under-representation of COVID-19 activity in the Thunder Bay district.

The next set of data will be released Wednesday.
