SACHIGO LAKE FIRST NATION, Ont. — The Chief and Council of Sachigo Lake First Nation say they have seized drugs and a large quantity of cash which they believe was the proceeds of drug trafficking.
As a result, a member of the community has been ordered to leave.
According to a news release issued by the First Nation on Wednesday, the seizure was made on May 17.
Acting on a tip from a community member, Chief Robert Beardy and Council accompanied by a Sachigo Lake First Nation constable conducted a search of a local residence.
They found drugs, drug paraphernalia, and over $141,000 in cash.
The release stated that Nishnawbe Aski Police Service was notified of the search in advance, but "officers confirmed the inability to participate."
It said NAPS officers observed from a distance as the Chief, Council members and Sachigo Lake officer executed the search.
The First Nation has a by-law designed to protect the community from unlawful drugs and alcohol.
As a result of the search, the Council passed a resolution evicting a member of the community.
Beardy said "The leadership will, without hesitation, remove anyone participating in the making or selling of narcotics."
Sachigo Lake is about 650 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
NAPS has not issued a news release concerning the incident, and it's not known if charges have been laid.
