Council Preview: Budget gets one last look

City council will hold its final vote on the 2013 budget tonight.

It's the last chance to add or subtract anything from the document, which currently includes a tax increase of about 3.5 per cent.

Also included in the budget are increases to many user fees, and a 7.1 per cent increase to the price you pay for water.

Councillors spent the better part of February debating the proposed budget. Over the course of six meetings community groups and taxpayers came forward with their own ideas and requests.

Some on Council also made pitches for certain projects and positions to be added.

One of those was for repairs to Heath Park Pool in Westfort. The estimated cost of the work needed on the outdoor pool is a quarter of a million dollars.

But city staff are asking council to hold off on the repairs for another year. That would provide time for an assessment of all three outdoor pools.

A memo to Councillors does provide a list of projects that could be dropped from this year's budget in order to fix Heath Pool without impacting the tax increase.
