THUNDER BAY – Construction of condominiums at the Thunder Bay Country Club, which began six years ago, isn’t expected to be completed until late 2020 or early 2021.

Developers at The Residence at Thunder Bay Country Club confirmed they are seeking a new contractor to complete the 109-suite project, which will delay completion from its fall 2019 target.

“The projection is to start in April with the upper floors. By that time we will have a general contractor and a firm bid price,” developer Doug Coppin said.

Coppin said the contractor that handled the first phase, which was primarily basement work, wasn’t qualified by Tarion, the new home build warranty provider, to complete the upper floors.

The structure has been capped up for the winter and will be heated through the winter, Coppin added.

Once resumed, construction is anticipated to take 18 to 24 months. Coppin said some suites could be occupied by the end of 2020 with total completion likely in 2021.

The second phase still requires a building permit from the city.

Construction began in 2012 but was stalled for a number of years due to financial challenges. The country club, including the condo project and nine-hole golf course, was purchased by the current ownership group of local investors in 2015. Work on the condo building restarted last year.
