Driver charged after high-speed pursuit on wrong side of twinned highway

Suspect charged with dangerous operation of vehicle, arson.

DORION, Ont. -- A 34-year-old man is in custody after a pursuit that began when he was caught driving on the wrong side of the divided highway east of Thunder Bay and ended when he allegedly tried to burn the vehicle.

Provincial police officers received reports just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday of a pick-up truck being driven at a high rate of speed, heading eastbound on Highway 11/17 in the wrong direction.

Officers pursued the vehicle near Dorion but it failed to stop and continued in the wrong way. The driver then attempted to turn around on the highway but went off the road and became stuck in the ditch. The driver allegedly called 911 and made verbal threats to police.

The OPP's emergency response team attended the scene and the vehicle caught fire while they negotiated with the driver. Members of the team breached the window of the vehicle and arrested the suspect, The truck was completely burned.

The driver, from Thunder Bay, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and arson. He is scheduled to appear in Nipigon court.
