An exploration company has set up shop in the city.
Abitibi Geophysics, based out of Val-d’Or, has 350 projects in Ontario. President Pierre Berube said the company decided it was time to open an office in the province and wanted to do it in Thunder Bay, a place he calls the heart of mining exploration in the province.
While the area has seen a downturn in exploration recently, Berube said they want to be close to the clients and projects in Ontario.
“Mining exploration has always been cyclical. It’s always going up, going down. Now we’ll traverse through a very low cycle but at least we’re here to serve our clients,” he said.
The company will hire 10 field technicians this year to survey areas in the region. By 2014, it will have a $1 million payroll here in Thunder Bay Berube said.
